Opening morning was a bit difficult as the rain
persuaded most to stay at home in the comfort of a
bed. However, for the ones who decided to brave the
weather....were greeted with many birds sounding off
all morning long. My bird flew down within minutes
of me setting up decoys and getting comfortable in
my blind. Although there was gobbling in every
direction you could point, this bird only made one
yelp and walked straight in to the decoys. He was in
half strut when I decided to harvest him. 9 inch
beard and 3/4 to 1 inch spurs. The weather has been
better since that day and there have been several
birds killed, and they are still hammering right
now. So, its not to late. Get your
call, gun, decoys, facemask and head for the woods!
Reported Second weekend
Johnny and Tim harvested 2 more Turkeys Way to go
fellas!
Just got a report from David on a
record Gobbler 4/16

Blake
Harrison was visiting Eddie and I, with a close
friend and former member Dave Young. It has been
around 12 years ago since Dave has been here. He
returned home to Texas then after completing his
residency as a surgeon in Atlanta. Hopefully, we can
get them back next spring with better weather so
Dave can harvest a bird also. Both guys were intent
on returning to Texas on Sunday with birds in the
bag. We hunted hard all weekend, however the weather
was a player again as springtime seems to always
bring unstable storms. Friday's storms moved in and
did not resolve until early Saturday morning. We
were left with extreme winds all day Saturday.
Once again, determination paid off! Saturday
evening we made contact with a bird responding on
the front side of Kincaid Mountain. Blake set his
sites on a true trophy, as this bird gobbled the
whole distance until Blake closed the deal. The bird
did hang-up at about 70 yards. However, the bird was
uninformed that Blake was shooting a 3 1/2 inch
magnum. This trophy weighed over 20 lbs, and had a
10 inch beard with close to 1 1/4 spurs.

Congratulations! - Rob's Buck is a new FCWA Club
Record
Several Bucks and Does were Harvested the 1st
week of gun season. The numbers on the big lease are definitely up
this year. It's estimated there have been at least 5 or 6
8 pointers off the big lease and most have
weighed around 140 to 150 pounds. Don's deer had a inside spread of
about 14 1/2 inches and weighed about 145 pounds. He killed
another this weekend (11/29) that was almost identical. David Brock
has also killed an 8 pointer that was about the same size.
It's estimated there have been around 10 or15 doe's harvested so far
as well. One weighed over 140 pounds.
